ANTICI MATTEI PALACE AND STABLES

Description

PALAZZO ANTICI MATTEI E SCUDERIE

Birthplace of the Marchesa Adelaide Antici, Giacomo Leopardi’s mother, and in whose Gallery the marriage took place with Monaldo. The building, dating back to the 16th century, is characterized by simple and elegant lines; the Latin inscriptions on the architraves of the windows recall the luster of the family, first "Antiqua" and then "Anticia". The building also houses an important archive, partly from an inheritance by the Roman family of the Mattei Princes, to whom belonged cardinal Carlo Mattei, who signed the important Tolentino treaty with Napoleon. From this house came illustrious men of arms, letters and faith, such as cardinals Tommaso and Ruggero, Rinaldo, captain of the Crusaders, and the Marquis Giulio, whose name is linked to the administration of the city of Recanati for about twenty-five years . Opposite the entrance to the palace, Cardinal Tommaso Antici built a stable, decorated with a typical façade with some statues and busts from the Flaminio circus in Rome.
